History

In 1990, a few believers who were attending church in town, saw a need for a Christian witness in Eastern Pictou County. They formed a new church, using rented facilities, and began worshipping in Merigomish, NS. By 1993, members were introduced to Village Missions, an organization whose purpose is to provide spiritual leadership to churches in this very situation; churches that were non-self supporting but could benefit from a full-time pastor.

Freedom Bible Church entered into partnership with Village Missions while Pastor Doug and Glenda Campbell were pastoring the church. They became Village Missionaries and the church became affiliated with VM. In 1998, a property in Sutherland’s River became available. At this point, the church had been meeting in the “Old Red Schoolhouse” in Sutherland’s River. The church members looked into the possibility and put in an offer on the piece of land. It was an old farm of 23 acres, with a barn and farmhouse.

God provided in tangible ways and allowed the church to buy the property where the church still is today. The barn was renovated to be used as a church. The house was upgraded to provide a comfortable parsonage. And an un-needed building was moved on to the property for a pastor’s office and storage.

Over the years, God has blessed this small work and today we are debt-free. We have had our challenges over the years as any church has. We are by no means a “perfect church” because that doesn’t exist, but we do seek to provide a church atmosphere where people can grow in their faith.
